First Rejection.

It’s happened now so I know what to expect. I’m going to what someone said on a forum. She expects rejection and is happy if something good happens. The wasn’t personalised at all, just a “Dear Author” and it was signed by the agency. At least they apologised for sending a form letter and I’m grateful for getting a reply. Usually email queries only get a response if the person is interested. I’m disappointed, obviously, but he’s only one.

I’m trying not to pick favourites, but it’s hard. Two of them (one agency who represents Stephen King!) and another agent (who sounds like she loves horror like I do) are in my mind right now, and I’d LOVE to get one of them!

Have you tried the Horror Writers Association website? Quite a few horror agents are members. There’s a lot of interesting stuff here and a lot less genre-snobbery in the US. Saw your blog on Writewords, by the way.

    Good luck.

    Hi Zahra!

Well, you got your first rejection — congratulations! You’re a real writer now! : )

As another person told me, she knows of writers who are too scared or anxious to even BEGIN the query process. I do hope you give yourself a pat on the back for putting yourself and your work out there.

    It’s very brave.

It’s the only way to get to that “yes”. All writers get rejections. I think of it as the twists and turns that will make your final success story even better.

And there’s a lot to learn about yourself and your strength as you go through this. : )

    Thanks to both of you!

It’s scary going into the email box and seeing “dear author” but one day it’ll be a “yes”. Like you said, if you don’t try then you’ll never know.
